What to Expect

MRI

MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a test that gives a detailed look at the anatomy, without any radiation involved.  It is performed with the patient laying down, and most often takes about 30 minutes.  Our 1.5-Tesla MRI is a high-field machine, giving a very accurate and detailed set of images for the radiologist to read.

CT 

CT, or computed tomography (a "Cat Scan"), is like taking multiple rapid x-rays in a row, showing the inside of the body in great detail.  It usually takes only a few minutes. Sometimes, CT can be done with IV injection of contrast (liquid dye), to allow the radiologist to see the organs more clearly.

 

Ultrasound 

Ultrasound involves a technologist using a small hand-held device placed on top of the patient's skin to take a look inside.  It involves no radiation, and usually takes about 20-30 minutes.

 

DEXA

DEXA involves using an x-ray to measure the density of bone, to look for osteoporosis.  It usually takes a few minutes.

 

Mammogram

A mammogram is an x-ray of the breasts.  Some compression is used to allow the radiologist to see your breast tissue better.  Our highly experienced women's imaging team has been doing breast imaging for many years.  It usually takes 5-10 minutes.
